The (10-0) Lady Indians host the Chipola Women's Classic, Dec. 12-13. Chipola plays Georgia Highlands, Friday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. Gulf Coast and Eastern Florida State play at 5 p.m.
On Saturday, Dec. 13, the Lady Indians play Eastern Florida State at 4 p.m. Gulf Coast plays Georgia Highlands at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The (10-0) Lady Indians are the number one in the state and nation topping both the FCSAA State Poll and the NJCAA National Poll.
Chipola's Evelyn Akhator was the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season. Akhator, a sophomore from Nigeria, averaged 15.7 points and 16.3 rebounds in three games the week of Nov. 25-27. Her efforts led to three wins at the Capital Courtyard Classic, including a 70-39 win over Walters State in which she racked up 17 points, 13 rebounds and five steals. Akhator recorded double-doubles in each game, including with 11 points and 15 rebounds against Central Florida on Nov. 25.
Chipola's women scored a big 75-37 win over Southern Union on Nov. 27. Akhator led Chipola with 19 points and 21 rebounds. Sueterrica Key had 16 points. Rosemarie Julien had 11 points and 7 rebounds. Kendra Martin added 10 points.
The Lady Indians trounced Walters State 70-39 on Nov. 26. Key paced Chipola with 25 points. Akhator had 17 points and 13 rebounds. Jayla Hobza had 11 points.
Head coach Greg Franklin is in his third year leading the Lady Indians who are coming off the most successful season in school history with a 34-2 record, a third place finish in the national tournament and a state championship. The 2013-14 team also ran the table in the conference season finishing (12-0) to take the league title.
