Chipola Great Russell Martin Leads Pirates in Post-Season Run

Former Chipola player Russell Martin hit a pair of solo home runs to lead his Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds in a season-ending wild card game on Oct. 1.
With the win the Pirates clinched their first postseason
appearance in 21 years. The Pirates will play St. Louis in the
National League Division Series beginning Thursday, Oct. 3.
Martin, a native of Ontario, Canada, led Chipola College to a second place finish in the Florida College System State tournament in 2002.
He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 17th round of
the 2002 draft and made his major league debut on May 5, 2006, at
age 23. The three time MLB All Star has won the Gold Glove and
Silver Slugger Awards.
He spent five years in LA, before moving on the Yankees where he was starting catcher in 2011-2012. In November, 2012, the Pirates signed Martin for two years and $17 million.
