Indians powerful on the mound and at the plate to win two
The Indians dominated on the mound in game one with 16 Ks; then pounded out 12 runs on 13 hits in game two.
The Chipola baseball team (6-1) would use different means to win two at Jeff Johnson Field on Saturday. In game one, Andrew Moore and Bo Bonds combined for 16 strikeouts to defeat Coastal Alabama (North), 5-2. The Indians pounded out 13 hits in game two to defeat Wallace-Dothan, 12-2.
Game One: Chipola - 5 Coastal Alabama (North) - 2
After the Eagles took an early 1-0 lead through the first inning, the Indians would score a single run in their next five innings to defeat Coastal Alabama (North).
Andrew Moore (1-0) and Bo Bonds combined for 16 strikeouts to limit the Eagles to two runs. Moore started the game for the Indians and despite allowing three singles and a walk in the first, got out of the inning with only one run scored. After the first, he would only allow one baserunner in the next three innings. Bo Bonds entered in the fifth and struck out the first five hitters he faced. Bonds finished with nine strikeouts in three innings of work and did not give up a hit to pick up the save.
In the second inning, Chipola tied the game on a double by Matthew Garcia that scored Andre Tarver who had reached on a one out hit.
Chipola added a run in the third on Matthew Corlew's two out double that scored Cameron Gray who had also reached on a double earlier in the inning. The Indians would not trail again after the hit gave them a 2-1 lead.
Jozsef Rohrbacker made the score 3-1 in the fourth with a solo shot to right field, his first of the season.
The Eagles gifted the Indians a run in the fifth when when a ground ball hit by Matthew Garcia could not be fielded. Matthew Corlew scored on the two out error.
In the sixth inning, the Eagles would add a run but a the Indians would get it back on a solo home run by Paxton Tomaini, his second of the season.
Game Two: Chipola - 12 Wallace-Dothan - 2
For the second time in as many days, the Indians scored in double digits over the visiting Govs.
After Wallace-Dothan jumped out to a 1-0 lead, Myles Austin started the Chipola offense off in the bottom of the first with a lead-off home run, his second of the season. The Indians would add three more in the inning. Alfonso Villalobos scored on a bases loaded walk to Mark Black. Cameron Gray and David Castillo scored on Matthew Garcia's two out single.
The Indians would put up eight runs in the third inning when the first ten hitters in the inning reached base, nine of the ten on hits, before an out was recorded.
Turner Toms started the game for Chipola. Toms allowed one run on zero hits over one inning, walking one. Seth Dudley earned the win for the Indians, pitching one inning and striking out one. Isaiah Bennett and Jack Murphy entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.
Team Notes
- The Indians are now hitting .382 for the season and have outscored their opponents 63-23.
- Indians' pitchers have an ERA of 1.875 and struck out 71 in the first seven games of the season.
- Chipola will play at home again on Friday, February 5, at 5 PM against Florida SouthWestern State.
