Chipola Rallies to Sweep Andrew College
Chipola Baseball secures the weekend series
#2 Chipola Baseball (19-6) hosted the Andrew College Tigers (13-8-1) in a Saturday double header. In this matchup, the Chipola bats would rally to put up 23 hits and 14 runs in two games, winning game one 7-6 and game two 9-8.
Game One:
In the first inning, Matthew Garcia walked with one out followed by a Cameron Gray single. Mark Black would bring in Garcia on an RBI ground ball. With two outs, a two-run home run from Andre Tarver would clear the bases to go up 3-0.
After the Tigers got a run back on a second inning home run, the Indians would get the run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI from Matthew Garcia.
The score would remain 4-1 until the seventh inning. In the top half of the inning, a three-run home run gave the Tigers a lead and they would add on another run to push the score to 6-4.
With two outs and the bases empty, Chipola used a single, four walks and a hit batter to score three runs and come away with a victory.
In relief, Michael Esposito (2-0) picked up the win, throwing two innings, allowing four runs, and striking out three.
Luis Guerrero started the game and pitched five innings, allowing one run, four hits, and striking out 10.
Cameron Gray reached base in every bat, going 3-for-3 on the day with three singles, an RBI and two base on balls.
Lyle Miller-Green had his 7th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4.
Game Two:
In game two, the Indians fell behind early before coming back in the late innings to sweep the double header.
Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Indians scored six runs on three singles, a double, and two home runs. Matthew Corlew's second home run of the season would give the Indians the lead, scoring Matthew Garcia who reached on a single and Cesar Franco who doubled. Following singles from Lyle Miller-Green and Myles Austin, Paxton Tomaini homered for the second time in the game to put the Indians up 8-4.
In the top of the sixth, the Tigers tied the game on two-run homers by Chase Porter and Jacob Pierce.
Matthew Garcia led off the bottom of the sixth with his first home run of the season, pushing the Indians back out in front, 9-8.
Lyle Miller-Green allowed one hit and struck out one Tiger batter in the seventh to pick up his first save of the season.
Seth Dudley got his first win of the season getting the final two outs of the sixth inning.
Jaylen Nowlin started for the Indians tossing 3 innings, allowing an unearned run, no hits, and four strikeouts.
Paxton Tomaini was 3-for-3 on the day with two home runs, a single, and four RBIs.
Zac Rice had two doubles finishing 2-for-4 in the game.
Matthew Garcia was 2-for-4 with a single and a solo home run.
Team Notes:
- With his ten strikeouts in game one, Luis Guerreo is now seventh in the NJCAA rankings with 40 strikeouts.
- Paxton Tomaini's home runs in the fourth and fifth inning of game two came from each side of the plate.
- In his first plate appearance since February 21, Matthew Corlew hit his second home run of the season.
- The Indians hit a season-high four home runs in game two. The team hit eight home runs this week, bringing their season total to 29, which is third in the NJCAA.
