Nowlin shuts down Tallahassee; Offense heats up
#7 Indians defeated the Eagles, 10-1, on Thursday night
Mark Black and Jozsef Rohrbacher were a combined 5-for-5 at the plate and Jaylen Nowlin struck out eleven on Thursday night as the #7 Indians defeated Tallahassee, 10-1, at Jeff Johnson Field.
The Eagles got on the board after Nowlin allowed two walks in the first inning. With two outs, a single into center field plated a run for Tallahassee and gave them an early 1-0 lead.
The Indians would answer back in the bottom half of the inning. After back-to-back singles to lead off the inning from Matthew Garcia and Zac Rice, Mark Black doubled with two outs to put the Indians on top, 2-1.
In the second inning, the Indians would again have consecutive singles to start the inning as Jozsef Rohrbacher and Alfonso Villalobos both had drives into left field. With one out, Paxton Tomaini grounded out to first to score Rohrbacher and give Chipola the 3-1 lead.
Mark Black and Dylan Goldstein would continue the trend as each singled to start the third inning. With one out, Jozsef Rohrbacher hit his second home run of the season to stretch the Indians' lead to 6-1.
The Indians would put the game out of reach in the fourth inning. With one out, Paxton Tomaini singled and scored on Mark Black's second double of the night. Consecutive walks to Goldstein, Matthew Corlew, and Rohrbacher would score Black and put the Indians ahead, 8-1. Alfonso Villalobos picked up his second hit of the night with two outs, driving a double to left field that scored Goldstein and Corlew.
Nowlin moved to 3-0 on the season. His six innings pitched and eleven strikeouts were season-highs for the freshman left-hander. Nowlin allowed only two hits and walked four.
The Indians (21-6, 2-0 PC) and the Eagles (9-14, 0-2 PC) will continue their conference series on Saturday in Tallahassee. The doubleheader between the two teams will begin at noon central.
