Chipola Shows Grit and Firepower at Southeast Classic
The Chipola Indians delivered a weekend full of drama, resilience, and offensive fireworks at the Chipola Southeast Classic, finishing the four-game stretch with three wins and one hard-luck loss against a strong field of competition.
Chipola opened the event Thursday with a tough 8–6 loss to Southern Union State, a game that slipped away late despite the Indians building an early five-run cushion. Chipola struck first on a wild pitch in the opening inning and added to the lead with a solo home run from Hudson Gilman in the second. Starter Drew Colon was steady through four innings, but Southern Union erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by a three-run double from Santiago Pacheco. Tyler Correa and Michal Sindelka each drove in two runs, while Colin Guerra wreaked havoc on the bases with three stolen bags in the loss.
The Indians bounced back in dramatic fashion Friday morning with a thrilling 6–5 walk-off win over #4 Walters State. Trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh, Chipola mounted a clutch rally as Jeremiah Gary tripled home two runs before Tyler Correa delivered the game-winner with a double. Gary finished with three RBIs, while Guerra collected four hits in a perfect 4-for-4 performance. On the mound, Joey Ervin earned the win in relief, and Aaron Elissalt shut the door with three and one-third scoreless innings.
Later Friday, Chipola edged #3 Florida SouthWestern 4–3 in another tightly contested matchup. After falling behind in the fourth inning, the Indians responded with a three-run fifth inning sparked by Jeremiah Gary's two-run double and Tyler Correa's RBI single. Vladil Baldepina secured the victory with three strong innings of relief, while Michal Kovala provided a solid four-inning start. Colin Guerra once again paced the offense with two hits as Chipola's pitching staff limited Florida SouthWestern to just five hits.
Chipola closed the Classic in emphatic fashion Saturday with a 13–2 rout of Columbia State, powered by a nine-run second inning. The offensive outburst included home runs from Derek Gonzalez, Garrett Harper, and Hudson Gilman, while Kane Moye and Michal Sindelka drove in key runs during the decisive frame. Gilman later added a three-run homer in the fifth to cap the scoring. Clinton Harris earned the win, and Ashton Alston tossed two and one-third scoreless innings in relief to preserve the commanding lead.
Across the four games, Chipola showcased depth throughout the lineup and versatility on the mound. Colin Guerra, Tyler Correa, and Jeremiah Gary were consistent offensive catalysts, while multiple pitchers contributed quality innings in pressure situations. The Indians' ability to rebound from a late collapse in the opener and string together three straight wins underscored their toughness and balance.
